Windows Client Spam Filters

Client side spam filters are used with your mail client rather than working on the mail server. They are useful if your ISP either cannot filter all of their spam or refuse to. Some client side filters will work with any mail client whereas others are built as plugins for a particular program.

When you are chosing a spam filtering solution, you need to know how you access your email. Do you use POP3 or IMAP, or some other method? Do you use Outlook, Outlook Express, or another mail client? Once you know the answer to those questions, it makes chosing the right solution easier.

POP3 filters are useful if you use POP3 to collect your mail from your ISP. Most ISP end-users will use POP3, but ask your provider or check their website if you are in doubt.

POP3 filters come in several types: a POP3 proxy, which filters the spam much like some virus scanners, as you download your email; filters which delete spam off a POP3 account before you then download it with your regular mail client; applications which download the mail and then filter it afterwards.

You may find that if you use secure email services you get problems, but help is at hand even then.

POP3 Proxying with Secure Email

If you use a secure email service like the GMail POP3 service, you may have found that your proxy-aware spam filter and virus scanner (such as NOD32 or Norton) are letting spam and viruses through untouched, because they can't see inside the secure SSL-protected tunnel between the mail service and your mail client. You can restore service with a local SSL proxy. The mail stays encrypted as it leaves your PC, but is in the clear as it passes locally to your mail program.
